Hiroshima.

Note to readers: I know this blog has been spuradic at best, but when we are near a computer, we check for comments sometimes twice a day. We really look forward to hearing from all of you, even if it is not in response to the posts. Just send a note! thanx. JnA.

On Thursday we travelled by train to Hiroshima. No explanation necessary. We visited the Peace Memorial Museum (aka the A-bomb Museum). It was devastating. However, it did help that the Japanese show very little emotion in public, I didn't see one teary eye. I got choked up a couple of times seeing recovered clothing and the watches stopped at 8:15. It could have been worse. Mostly, I was just angry. I mean, wasn't the war over? And did it really warrant a second bomb? The focus of the museum is peace, however, so I'm trying to be zen about it.

This building has been dubbed the A-bomb Dome. It is one of only a handful of buildings to survive the explosion. It is believed that it survived because the bomb exploded 600 metres directly above it. It has been made a UNESCO World Heritage site--as it is the site of the first atomic bomb explosion (lest we forget).

Surprisingly though, Hiroshima is a bustling modern city outside the Peace Park. Beautifully surrounded by green mountains and big sky.

Hiroshima is one of the most incredible cities in the world. A testament to forgiveness... a sentiment that the citizenry of the country which committed this terrible atrocity would do well to learn.
